You're right, they do have more people online than they do reading the paper. That's because they get a paper on their driveway each morning reminding them that they exist. Once you pull the print/direct mail marketing out of their mix, they'll be relying on their age-old name and RSS feeds to keep them alive. It's the equivalent of "pulling the plug", you might live for a few more hours but the end is inevitable.

I think the biggest problem the Star has is the unrelenting pressure by Gannett to continuously fork over 40% margins. That's driven the Star to online as the only way to possibly make up for the losses over newsprint.

I don't know that the end of print will be the end of the Star. They have more people online than they do reading the paper, anyways. And - don't believe the inflated circulation numbers they are distributing. They print a lot of papers - but a lot of them never see the light of day.

<p>I just wanted to say that the WriteStuff Writer's conference at the Joseph-Beth Booksellers bookstore was awesome. At this conference I gained helpful and useful information in many catagories to help me as an author. Meeting other authors, people from WriteStuff, Author House Publishers, and array of other inspiring speakers not only broadened my horizons, but inspired me tremendously. Well done! Great job!</p>
<p>Best regards,</p>

Tom,
I just finished my book. The final edit should be Friday. As I help authors self-publish, I am, of course, self-publishing my book. But the point I want to make is that I'm finding the self-publishing experience liberating. Instead of sending my manuscript off to publishers and waiting for their rejections, I am simply moving forward. I am spending money on editing and working on getting a good cover designed. I've struggled on the title (which is now DRILL: Fast & Furious Book Promotion - better than the first title I had I think.) While I still recommend authors, especially fiction authors, to spend the time finding a publisher, self-publishing is exciting. I'm amazed at the lingering negative stereotype self-publishing has. Some books are best self-published. Anyway, just wanted to keep you updated and let you know things are still moving forward. Take care.

It was repoted today, the Indianapolis Star (Indianapolis' only daily newspaper) managers informed it's newsroom staff that the paper's business section no longer will be a stand-alone section beginning in late June of this year.

What a sad commentary on the state of affairs with this publication.

Indianapolis, the Colts, and Mayor Petersen in particular, just completed a bid for the Super Bowl and promoting our city as a "World Class City".

Now, this "world class city" wont even have it's own business section in it's only local newspaper.

I guess the NFL owners that rejected our bid know something about Indianapolis that we don't.

Picture this scenario: our pro-business Governor, Mitch Daniels, is hosting an event for a group of out-of-state business leaders. He's extolling our state's progressive approach in advancing it's business climate. He's hoping to attract new businesses and jobs to our state. Then, he's asked a simple, reasonable question by one of his (and our) guests - "I noticed that your local (only) newspaper doesn't have a business section...whassup with that?"

Clearly, this cut by The Star is all about costs. Business leaders and lawmakers need to pressure them to reverse their decision. This is not good for our city, as well as for all of Indiana. The publishers know this, they just don't care.

Thank goodness that the IBJ (Indianapolis Business Journal) exists and that the Internet is now on computers.
